Then  and Now....A Visual History of Virginia Beach

Now through Jan 13, 2014 at The Gallery at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach

This exhibit is a glimpse into the archives of Virginia Images Photography.  Photographer Tim Rudziensky compiled the exhibit to showcase the history of Virginia Beach. What it looked 100 years ago, fifty years ago when it was founded as a city, and what it is today.

There are many photographs on display that depict the area as early as 1902. A featured photograph is Town Center.

This 2011 ultra wide panorama showcases the new downtown area. There is a comparison set of two photographs titled "Then and Now" with views captured in 1971 and 2008.

The completion of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is also part of this photography exhibit. A gap in the bridge where the final section was placed in 1963. Another photograph of the Opening Ceremonies in April of 1964 is displayed with other photographs emphasizing development along the Shore Drive corridor.

Other contributors include the Norfolk Public Library and the Virginian Pilot. One favorite of these older images is of the Alan B. Shepard Civic Center, a.k.a. "The Dome". The Dome was the site of memorable rock concerts including performances by Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Grateful Dead and many more. Since it's razing in the 1980’s the lot has served as a parking lot while it awaits a final determination on repurposing to conform with other developments at the oceanfront.

There it sits, on Shore Drive, the gazebo from the old Duck In.
Six years later and the site is empty, except the gazebo stranded
on the beach. An ocean breeze and ghosts of the past, whistling
through the structure that was once the go to spot on Friday nights.

I pass the Duck In everyday as I drive across Shore Dr., and
just about every day I think of those Friday night parties. If
you've been there, done that, then you can feel my pain. There
was a mystical quality about that beach, catching up with good
friends, a cool breeze with a brew in hand.

Sure there are other establishments to patronize, the Shore Drive corridor still has it's bars and restaurants, but none with the ambiance of the Duck In. This was a special place, for a very long time.

I didn't attend that last party, August 14th 2005. It was a Sunday night, and Jimmy Buffet was rumored to be making a surprise appearance. Even with that possibility, I opted for a quick helicopter flight to capture the action as the sun set on this popular icon. A piece of Virginia Beach died that night.

My pilot Keith Smith phoned and convinced me this was a must have photograph. He was right, as of this writing, my gallery still offers three or four different photos of the "Last Call".  Here are two of the best sellers.

Virginia Beach Photo Mural - 33 foot Wide Beach Panorama

A 33 foot wide x 8 ft high panorama of the north end of Virginia Beach is one of the newest photographs available through the Virginia Images Gallery. I've been working hard to capture more local images, building my portfolio to include scenes that are not specific to one area or depicting just one single subject.

For many years I've concentrated on capturing historic architecture, landmarks, popular local scenes and botanics. My wife and business partner Maryanne, has encouraged me to wide the perspective a little, to change my style of art.  She has also continued to push me toward producing large canvas prints. As usual, she was right! Why I resisted the trend toward canvas for so long has no reasonable explanation, other than perhaps being comfortable with what I had been doing for years.

Canvas has changed the way photographers display their art forever. We've always made large photos, and until 2005 framed them under glass. Glass! Reflections! Heavy! Breakable! Fingerprint Collectors.....

Here is the recently completed panorama of the beach at the North End of the Oceanfront. Captured with a Canon 5D Mark II, the nine image composite is over 500 MB and prints out as a 33 foot wide by 8 foot high wall mural.

Having been sidelined for months due to an injury, I was really feeling the need to get out and capture images with a new style, in particular images that look great reproduced on canvas.  I spent one full week rediscovering the city I live in. Virginia Beach has so much to offer, that it really is possible to find great pic's right outside my front door.

This photograph has simple composition, but it's one of my new favorites and I'm hoping it will be a popular one at the upcoming Chic's Beach Art Show on June 25th.  This spring I made an effort to go back to the basics, following the elementary rules for composition. Can you see them in this picture?

A rented Camaro for a week also got me out of bed earlier than usual creating those softly lit scenes every photographer loves! Stopping first at First Landing Seashore State Park, a place I've been a hundred times, I was able to see it in a way I never have before. I traveled to Pungo, picked some strawberries, went to Back Bay to capture beach dunes, and then stopped by Big Sky Farms to photograph horses.

6th Annual Chic's Beach Art Show

The 6th Annual Chic's Beach Art Show  is scheduled for June 25th in the park behind HK On The Bay at 4600 Lookout Road. This local's only event has become the Premier Event at Chic's Beach. It is well attended by the community and does draw traffic from other areas of Virginia Beach.

This show will feature several new artists never before seen at Chic's Beach, as well as some of the regulars.  For my part, the newest additions to the Vintage Photos will be on display and available for sale. There are thirty nine additional Vintage photographs of old Virginia Beach and Norfolk to show, and several of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Washignton DC.  A collection of seashell photographs captured along the Chesapeake Bay will be available, and one of newest photographs, of the March 2011 Super Moon rising over the evening surf along the Virgnia Beach Oceanfront will be available on canvas. Many of my best and most popular photographs, produced on canvas and framed, will be available for sale.

Virginia Beach Photography Studio Expands Selection of Vintage Scenes

If you dine out, go to a doctors office, visit an area hospital or other public buildings, you've probably seen those pic's of our historic city, and may have wondered where they came from. There is one local business that has a large collection available to the public.

Since 1993 Virginia Images Photography has specialized ( as the name implies) in documenting the Commonwealth. The collection comprises street scenes, landmarks, popular places and aerial photographs. Some show the boardwalk and beach-goers, other depict construction of landmarks, hotels and even Mt. Trashmore. This 1901 "Bathing Beauties" shows the swimwear of the day - and the collection continues into modern day images.

There is a studio in Virginia Beach that houses thousands of old photographs of the local area. If you frequent local restaurants and retail stores, you've probably caught a glimpse of the collection. 

Local business owners have found the pictures, with a decidedly local flavor, illustrate the historic significance of Hampton Roads. The photographs have become so popular that I've turned the focus of my business, Virginia Images Photography, to the historic images.

It's been five years since I acquired a collection of aerial photographs, taken between 1964 and 2004. Combining the aerial photos with the contemporary work I produce, makes for a selection of images that I am proud to offer to our clients.  Add these scenes of the area, captured by local photographers since 1901, truly rounds out the selection. 

The photographs I'll show you here are just a glimpse of some of my favorite areas of the Beach, but keep in mind that there are so many photographs of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, that I could post a bog a day with a dozen images, and it would take twenty years to get them all up on the web.

If you frequented the Waterside in the 1990's you'll remember the photography my gallery that was on Waterside's second floor. We've moved twice since 1998, first to Hilltop in Virginia Beach (1998-2005) and then in 2005, to the Lynnhaven Mall area.

The new facility allows the production of everything from 8" x 10" prints for collectors, to 33" x 115" wide murals for display in local hospitals, convention centers, auto dealerships, schools, businesses of all types, and of course private homes.  Last year we began producing art murals, printed on canvas, that have the look and feel of oil paintings. The canvas is coated, eliminating the need for glass, which from a visual standpoint, is a big advantage. No glare, lightweight panels are easy to install and easy to care for.

With thousands of photographs printed and on display, picture and history buffs may want to plan ahead, leave the kids at home and allow an hour or more for a visit to the studio.

This time of year (Nov - Dec) we're in the gallery a lot, but I still suggest calling ahead before you visit, we're not always in the studio. Normal hours? Usually 11:00am to 5:00 PM Monday to Friday, others hours, weekends, appointments etc can be arranged by calling 757 425-3110.

Great Neck Art Show & Jazz Festival 2010 Virginia Beach Virginia

East Coast Art Source, Inc. together with Spring Branch Community Church, announce an open call to artists wishing to participate in the Great Neck Art & Jazz Festival. This one day outdoor event will be held October 2, 2010 from 10 to 4, on church grounds at 1500 N Great Neck Road Virginia Beach, VA 23454

Emphasis is on Local Artists from the Hampton Roads area, although artists from other regions are welcome to participate. Booth spaces are 10' x 10' ($75.00) and 10' x 20' ($125.00).
East Coast Art Source, Inc. organizes several successful art shows, including the East Beach Art & Jazz Festival (Norfolk VA) held in April and Chic's Beach Art Show (Virginia Beach) held in May. Artist Liaison Maryanne Rudziensky says there is space at this venue for up to 50 or more artists, food service, rest rooms and easy access for unloading and loading into your space.

This year's headliner is soft Jazz specialist Stan the Sax Man. Show Director Tim Rudziensky believes that Stan's music draws the public out of the neighborhoods and into a relaxed buying atmosphere. Also worth mentioning: there is plenty of easy free parking so everyone arrives stress free, without riding a bus or walking a long distance to the show.

Live Music and a Wine Tasting will accompany approx fifty artists for the third edition of this event.  Artists tell us they will bring more original art this year to meet the demand of local residents, and a wider range of media will be displayed by several new artists. Stan the Sax Man will perform on stage, there will of course be a Wine Tasting with selected menu items, and there are activities for children.
This is an excellent venue for an arts festival, held on private property under the shade of some large trees in the parks along 27th Bay Street between Pretty Lake and the Chesapeake Bay. Autumn Colors About To Burst Across Virginia

Make Plans Now For This Year's Parade Of Colors!

In previous years I have missed much of an incredible and inexpensive opportunity, and so I plan to do things differently this year. More than just a day trip! Virginia has endless possibilities for great fall photography. The Fall Foliage Network make it easy plan trips around the Mid-Atlantic, capturing great photographs with unusual compositions.   You can visit them online at http://www.foliagenetwork.com/ . According to the Oct. 10 2009 report, there is little to see so far, but the good news is that there is still time to plan for the burst of color that is about to happen.

I try to capture images that show color in connection with known structures, or against architectural features common to colonial construction.  For me, it is a way explore, photograph and escape the office for a few days!  Here's one of my favorite images of a well known Virginia Landmark. Do you know what it is?

Hint: If you've ever been to C'Ville, you know!

Some of the prettiest and most colorful trees in autumn are the maples. That's what you are looking at here, at the University of Virginia. Other colleges have given me inspiration to capture other architectural gems. Virginia has dozens of colleges and hundreds, if not a thousand landmarks,  so a photographer could wonder around the Commonwealth and never run out of subjects. With the addition  of GPS the whole process became much easier, especially when it comes to parking, finding gas and food in the middle of nowhere!

In the early 1990's I visited Colonial Williamsburg and took a summertime photograph of the Wren Building at the College of William and Mary.  A few years later, I returned and captured a photograph of the same scene, from a similar angle of view. This time it was November, and the trees show a  remarkable array of natures color.

I already had a project in mind for the two images, that by repeating visits to Williamsburg I would create another "Seasons"  set.  In my studio, "Seasons" refers to a set of photos taken at different times of the year. A very popular series of the Nicolson Store, also in Williamsburg, can be viewed at our studio. 

The fall season is almost upon us, apparently delayed a bit this year. I expect October 20-29 to be the peak of color in the mountain areas of Virginia. Low lying areas a bit later east of the Blue Ridge, while western areas the leaf drop will have occurred by then. For a more relaxing tour this year, a few vineyards are on my list, a welcome respite from touring Virginia Beach again! Barboursville Vineyards in Central Virginia is close enough to visit on a day trip from Virginia Beach, as is The Williamsburg Winery. If you do go to Barboursville, be sure to check out the ruins!  This photograph is simple composition, the descending fence line helps to draw your eye into the scene, and provides some perspective to just how tall the trees are!

In 2000, I had just purchased my first Digital camera. As it was my first venture into digital photography, I didn't want to spend much, so I settled on a Fuji with a fixed lens (not SLR). The 3 MP camera produced remarkable 17 MB files that made pretty decent 16 x 20 images.  Out with this new toy on my last real autumn tour (until this year) I forced myself to continue a trip around the state, even though it was raining most of the time! Much to my surprise, I learned a lot about low even lighting and how to make the most of a bad situation!  After a day of misty weather, I came across Goshen Pass, near Roanoke. The scene stunned me at first, it was just what I had been searching for. On a bright day, this photograph would not look anything like this! The low light was perfect, allowing for well saturated colors.  The misting rain was creating foggy conditions and low cloud cover at the mountain top adds to this photographs appeal.
